glossary side photo
Illustrator®/illustrator
A graphics software design program by Adobe. Also a professional graphic artist who creates images to convey a message.
imaging
Electronic alteration of a photo/illustration, including retouching, adjustments in color and the removal of unwanted objects (such as shadows) or the addition of elements (such as product logos).
impressions
Also called a page view, an impression is a single display of a particular ad on a web page. Some search engine fees are based on the number of impressions served, though the majority are based on the number of clicks (pay-per-click).
incentive site
A website that gives some kind of reward for visitors who click on a link, fill out a form, etc.
InDesign®
A page-layout program by Adobe. Graphic designers use InDesign to electronically manipulate text and graphics.
indexability
Also known as crawlability and spiderability, indexability refers to the potential of a website or its contents to be crawled or "indexed" by a search engine. If a site is not "indexable," or if a site has reduced indexability, it has difficulties getting included in web search results.
indicia
Mailing permit information that is preprinted on envelopes, BRCs, etc.
infomercial
The use of a program-length time period to advertise products and services. This approach often includes a direct response offer to sell the advertised items directly to the public.
insert
A stand-alone printed piece that is placed or bound into a publication.
insertion
General media term that refers to the item to be published (such as an advertisement) or broadcast (radio or television spot).
insertion order
Written contract/notification for an ad placement, which includes dates of publication/broadcast, length, location, size, color and cost.
intellectual property
Abstract forms of "property" such as patents, copyrights and trademarks—distinct from the concrete form of real property.
internet
General term used to describe a global network of computers used to transmit information. The most familiar aspect of the internet is the World Wide Web, which consists of various interlinked websites.
intranet
Intranets are private networks, usually maintained by corporations for internal communications, which use internet—usually web—protocols, software and servers.
IP address
Internet protocol address. Every system connected to the internet has a unique IP address, which consists of a number in the format of A.B.C.D where each of the four sections is a decimal number from 0 to 255. Most people use domain names instead and the resolution between domain names and IP addresses is handled by the network and the domain name servers.
ISP (internet service provider)
A business that provides access to the internet. Its services are available to either individuals or companies and include a
dial-in interface with the internet, software supply and often website and intranet design.
